About Offshore Support Vessel Insurance

South Africa's offshore oil and gas sector — centred on the Mossel Bay and deeper Karoo basin prospects, as well as mature production at Block 9 and exploration offshore the West Coast — requires a fleet of offshore support vessels (OSVs). Platform supply vessels (PSVs), anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTS), diving support vessels (DSVs) and crew transfer vessels (CTVs) all require specialist marine insurance. The risks in offshore operations are substantially higher than in port or coastal trading: weather, equipment failure, diving operations and proximity to offshore installations all create complex liability exposures. Lloyd's and specialist offshore marine markets typically underwrite this class.

Main Operating Areas

Mossel Bay offshore (PetroSA block)
Orange Basin, offshore West Coast
East African deepwater (project work)
Cape Point area (diving support)

Insurance Requirements

  • Hull & Machinery (offshore conditions)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is offshore support vessel insurance different from standard commercial hull?
Yes — significantly. Offshore vessel policies are written on Institute Time Clauses (Hulls) but with substantial modifications for offshore use, including extended machinery breakdown cover, offshore installation proximity endorsements, and enhanced collision liability provisions. Standard coastal trading hull policies are not suitable for OSV operations.
